canaca.com hosting good/bad?

I've hosted 3 different sites with them.

Everything has been good so far, except for one common thing with all 3 sites. The FTP service is TERRIBLE!

For whatever reason, it takes longer than usual to connect, and you will get randomly disconnected for no reason what so ever multiple times. So you reconnect, start uploading again, and it will lock up and kick you out randomly again. It is very annoying especially while trying to upload multiple files. I've tried from multiple locations and the problem happens at all of them. I've emailed them about it before, but it hasn't really ever improved.

Other than that 1 thing, I've been happy with them.

EDIT: Whoops, forgot about one site. I've actually hosted 4 different sites with them.

Agreed but 99% of AT'ers could care less ... why? Because they're cheap but we all know that.

I have no personal experience with canaca.com so I would recommend searching WHT for canaca.ca or canaca.com and you'll find threads like these:

Repeat after me, you get what you pay for. Don't expect Lexus quality and reliability at Kia bargain prices. There are some affordable web hosts which are good but they aren't going to offer you 10GB/100GB for $2/mo or something ridiculous like that.

WAKE THE FRIK UP!

Thanks for the replies, I understand you get what you pay for, unfortunately the site will be mostly for personal use so I'm not looking to spend more than I have to.

I like canaca, though my needs were 1) large storage space 2) high bandwidth cap 3) reasonable price, I wasn't too worried about uptime and connection speeds (as long as they were reasonable and they have been) since it was for a non-critical personal site. I started using them after a trip to Russia where I had about 3GB of photos after collecting from about 5 people in the my group, I was able to share it with the other people (there was about 20 in the group) without having to worry.

However, if you only have a small personal site, there are other low cost places that don't oversell as much as they do so make sure you evaluate your needs.

prolly no more than $10 a month, I also have to register a domain, haven't done that yet

First you want to register your domain with NameCheap.com

Canaca.com offers 1GB/40GB for $7.95/mo which is a good deal but read those reviews above.

Check out WHT's web host offers section for deals then search for reviews. Remember you get what you pay for, I cannot emphasize that enough.

The average personal web site should be fine with "only" 500MB/10GB. Yes it's nice to have 20GB/400000GB but would you actually use it? If you are you'd better add an extra 0 to your budget.
