Can your Secondary Master have DMA off, and the Slave have it on?

I just bought a Yamaha 8/8/24 burner, and on the Read Me First banner in the box it says that it has to have DMA off, and also if there is a device slaved to it, that the slave has to have DMA off as well. Is this true?
That's not cool becuase my 2nd device is a DVD Rom and that would really hurt DVD performance to have DMA off...

Default win98 is DMA not checked = off.. so you can select hard drive 1 or 2 and check dma on and not on the burner

Hmm well according to Via's DMATOOL (I have the Via 686A Southbridge) DMA is disabled for the CDRW (Secondary Master), it's in PIO mode, and DMA is enabled for the DVDROM (Sec. Slave), it's in UDMA mode....and everything seems happy...

Wonder what Yamaha's warning was about...
