Can your memory...just die?

Here's the story. I was over at my sis' house installing some stuff. She pressed the shutdown button on the keyboard (while asking "what does this button do?") and the computer shut down. I then press the power button and the computer starts beeping, it won't even POST. I looked at the error code (it has the MSI D-braket at the back) and it says "memory initialization error".

So my question is, can the RAM just die off suddenly, like this seems to be the case?
 
Sure can. A decent voltage spike, a short, just plain crappy memory can cause that. You may want to make sure that the memory is seated correctly first though.
 
Second the motion.
First thing to do is to remove the memory stick and reinstall it. Make sure it is seated properly.

What kind of memory is it? If it is cheap memory, you have a larger chance of it crapping out on you. I've had customers where their memory ate and corrupted their files and then just didn't work anymore. That's why I never, ever, buy cheap memory.

I am sure lifetime warranties have existed a long time in general, and specifically to memory Toshiba had(has?) a lifetime warranty 10 years ago, long before Crucial even existed (1996). Micron has existed since 1978, but I don't know if they had a lifetime warranty before they established Crucial.

I am guessing your comment was not meant to be taken litteraly 🙂
