Can your HD become "unformatted"?

I have made a couple previous posts on here about my HD, and it "disappearing" from Windows recignition, and have finally fixed the problem. I ended up unhooking my working HD, and hooking this one up as the master, and acting like I was going to install Windows, so it would format it, and it worked, now it shows. Has anyone ever heard of a HD doing this? If so, I would like to know what did it.
