Can you use ATA 100 IDE cable on 24X burner?

I have a 24X burner that came with a 40 pin IDE cable. Can I install it on the same bus with an ATA 100 hard drive using the 80 pin IDE cable?

I am not sure what you mean. Would the ATA 100 hard drive still operate at ATA 100 and would the burner have problems copying on the fly?
