can you use anything other than a receiver for speakers?

I want something smaller than my receiver to hook a pair of speakers and a sub too. Are receivers the only option? I just need RCA audio inputs.

Car stereo?

No, sorry, home theater.

how about a car stereo though? just need to get a 12v DC to AC adapter and hack up a wiring harness to plug your speakers into.

that's an interesting idea...it'd look cool too ;)

what's the 4-ohms and 8-ohms mean in terms of subs?

I just need RCA audio inputs.

That's all the OP wants.

Ohm's law my friend. A regulated amplifier will develop twice the power at 4 ohms vs. 8. Most receivers are not regulated. Good amplifiers are and some can power loads well under 1 ohm.

Ah, thanks. I got a C- in AC/DC Circuit Analysis last semester :( Recomendations for books on understanding electronics?

If you have efficient speakers or don't need it super loud, sonic t-amp. If your sub can take speaker wire input/output you could connect that too.

review (watch out, nsfw ad),

To hook it up, RCA to 1/8" adapter.

Edit: what about a little receiver from a shelf system?
linky

Oh, and I think the integrated amp is still the best option.

What about the speaker connections on a subwoofer plate amp? I've seen them with connections for two satellites plus line input. Could I use that - hook up two satellites and hook up a CD player via the RCA line input? Here's a PDF -

It doesn't look like the line input is meant for audio input, but I dunno. Anyone care to expand?
