Can you use ANY Vista CD for installation?

I have a legal copy of Vista Premium retail version. Of course, this only comes with the 32 bit DVD, but I wanted to use 64 bit.

A friend has a COPY of Vista Ultimate. The plan was to use his CD to install Windows Premium. We did so, Ultimate installation asked which version to install, we chose Premium as we should have, and Vista has run well for a week now.

Suddenly, Vista reports it may be an unathorized version. Now I can't do anything but use IE to visit the web and activate Vista. I havn't used my key yet, as I don't want to void it or anything of that nature.

Could my licence be voided if MS found out I was involved with such a practice? I have a legal licence, but just wanted to another medium/cd to install from (rather then pay them 10 bucks to ship me one).

What cd's or mediums can I use to get Vista from. Again, I will be activating it using a legal key, but don't want to order, and more-so, I don't want to WAIT for it to come in the mail.

Thanks.

Functionally, you should have been able to install the 64-bit Vista Home Premium using the friend's DVD. But you said "Copy". Perhaps there's more to the story of the origin of that Vista x64 DVD?

Microsoft will ship you a 64-bit DVD w/SP1 for a nominal shipping and handling fee. I ordered mine and it cost $12.00 plus change, arrived in four days.

Go to this link, scroll down to the bottom where it reads 64-bit DVD, select your language (English - NA = North America), then click Go.

Select your Country, enter the Product Key, chose 64-bit DVD, so on and so forth.

As long as the copy is accurate and your key ID is legit - you will have no problem - unless, maybe, the copy is of an OEM version.
