can you use an ATA66 cable on an ATA33 (BX chipset) port?

wt.........this cable has no pin that prevents it. I know what you're are talking about now as i remember one not working because of that pin. I'm not sure if this cable is ATA66 or ATA100, but its thicker, has a blue end, a black end, and a grey middle connector. And the blue end will physically fit on the motherboard. But is it compatatible?

If I remember right, the blue end has a hole plugged so it wont insert into a ATA33 port. If it has a blue and 80 wires, its an ATA66/100 cable.

If you happened to have a cable that is plugged and your motherboard's IDE port have all the pins, you can simply unplugged the cable. Usually a needle or exacto knife will do the trick.

Just be careful about the cable orientation. Make sure that pin 1 line up with the markings.

Keyed pins have been around since before ATA66! 🙂
The problem is, some cabled have blocked pins & some connectors don't.
Someone told me that the pin has something to do with cable select, so it isn't always necessary, but it can get in the way.
I have 2 ATA100 cables, the Intel brand one has keyed holes & the one I got from Newegg.com doesn't.

Of course, it'll work! If the orientation pins is there and there's no hole for it on your connector, get a needle or thumb tack and drill s hole thru it. Then you're good to go.
