they told me in the verizon store that they dont recommend this because the voltages are slightly different and that can ruin a phones battery over time. but then i saw that verizon was selling a "universal miniusb" charger themselves. does anyone know if this is a safe thing to do?

Same output (500mA). The big V is feeding you a line of bull. Of course they want you to buy their high markup accessories.

You need to confirm the voltages, not just the amperage as uli2000 above mentions. Both chargers can have 500mA of output, but one can be at 3.7 volts, and the other can be at 9.6 volts.

All 'USB' charging should be 5v, but the important value is the current. Base charge current is 500mah, most BlackBerry chargers are 1000mah and the charger I have for my Pico Projectors are 1600mah. The main difference is charging speed, so it could be argued that higher speed (high mah) charging is detrimental over time.

Basically yes, you can use a BB charger with your Droid.

I use a BB charger for my Evo, since it was $8 with Prime. Works fine. It's just a USB to micro cable plus the AC wall wart. As long as Motorola hasn't bastardized the USB connector by charging off of a different voltage, it should be fine. Given that you can plug it into your computer, I'm almost certain you won't hurt anything because that's a known 5v right there.

This.

I've been using my Blackberry Storm charger for my Droid X the past 7 months

I have been using my strom charger as well since release date of my Droid X

All usb charging is 5v just look at the amperage. My storm is like 700/750 I don't remember exactly

If you buy a car charger make sure its 800+ mha if you want to use the gps without draining the battery
