Cause they have plenty of them in stock.

AT&T is sold out and back-ordered. They have no idea how to run a business. People who ordered after me have gotten theirs. They just randomly pick who to ship it to. You have to be lucky I guess :(

It doesn't matter where you buy the phone because it will all get hooked up through AT&T. You can probably go into an Apple Store or order it online. Expect to pay the full $599 for it though. That's how they screw existing customers. Give you the subsidized cost when you sign up but then make you pay full if a new version comes out. Personally I'd keep the 3G until the bugs are ironed out of the 3GS. There's really no point in upgrading right now.

I don't see how subsidizing the phone when you sign a 2 year agreement and then not letting you get another cheap phone a 1 year later is screwing anyone.

this. i paid for what i wanted, when i wanted it - and the net cost to me was very little. i love the 3gs and i'm glad i'm now synced up with apple's release cycle. i'll be upgrading again next year if they make significant changes again.

Yes, you can, and you can order it online if you wish, and have it shipped to you, or to your local Apple store.

As for at&t's shipping, it is first come first serve, but it's by type of phone ordered. I got my white 3G last year in two days, because everyone else wanted black. My coworker who went with me waited over a month for his black 16GB.
