Can you upgrade the CPU on the Xbox?

I would assume that chip is on the board, and not in a nice socket like your average motherboard...

Looking at a pic of the inside of the XBOX, it does appear to be mounted directly on the board.

really? i thought it had an AMD powerplant.. I'd buy the Xbox in that case! 😉

I noticed the 😉 but not sure if you know... Originally AMD was rumored to have the deal, but, intel was later annouced as the provider. They were, apparently, able to cut a better deal.

I'd imagine you could upgrade the CPU, but, my guess is it's surface mounted / soldered and wouldn't be worth the hassle. I guess we'll find out when the hackers start playing with the insides. We'll see.

ahh that sucks, game would have run better on it, if it was a T-Bird or something.. 😀

I got rid of my PIII 733 a LONG time ago, and they're just starting to use it... sucks!

oh well, it's more power than a Sony Playstation or N64 😀

Why bother swapping out the cpu?? Why not format the OS and install linux!
Now that'll be totally cool and will consider buying it 🙂

I don't think you can... Isn't the P3 a custom P3 (more robust?). I remember hearing somewhere that it was.

I'm pretty sure its not, besides that would mean more money put into R&D. The Nvidia GPU in there is sorta custom. I think there is an additional Vertex shader when compared to Gf3.

Please don't tell me any of you actually believed that for a split second. Intel and m$ have this little deal going on if you did not notice.

yeah i think they would just use a surface mount chip. Saves on cost of manufacturing. All components would be placed and soldered by SMT machines.

The "hack" I am looking for is for someone who wrote simulator that read XBox game and play it on regular PC 🙂

Because it's soo like a PC, i wouldn't be surprised to see them fairly quickly, and I wouldn't be surprised if they worked pretty well.
