Can you upgrade from win98---->Xp?

What the title says but can I do it without having to uninstall win98 or reformat my HD? I doubt that you can because they run off of a different core or watever but its worth a shot.
 
Technically it's possible but the upgrade really leaves you with a sub-par system. I'd say do a clean install or just don't worry about XP.
