Can you tell me what this plant is?

A little background info on this plant. Best friend's mom died and they gave us this plant of hers. Well it has been living for the past 3-4 years in our house.

Oddly enough the plant started to break down right around they threw the mom's ashes into the Pacific Ocean up in Oregon.

Kinda strange but not really banking on a connection, just wanting to know what this plant is so I can go buy another! The plant would have leaves on it and only lived in that water jar. The leaves would die and come back every month or so... but no more leaves... that thing is toast.

I'm not sure what the name of it is, but it looks like one of those plants that people put beta fish under.

Edit: I'm thinking of a peace lilly.

actually its not a peace lilly, this thing lived on water alone and the leaves were no bigger than a thumb

What were the shape of the leaves? Color, any variegation?

it looks like it used to be a Pothos aureus, more formal name Epipremnum pinnatum 'Aureum'. (my guess is based on the appearance of the stem -- the bumps along the stem look like where the leaves of the plant used to be)

The pothos plant can grow in soil or in water
