when someone gives you a phone number and you decide to text them are you able to tell after doing so whether that number even has texting so you can tell if theyare going to see your text

I mean if the number doesn't exist at all, it'll tell you that the message wasn't successfully delivered. Otherwise, no.

reminds me of a guy who swore up and down he could tell when people read the texts he sent them. i told him, no, you cant. he was all like "dude, look. the little envelope thing is closed, that means its sent. when it opens it means they read the text" he would get all pissed off when his friends would "read the texts but not respond"

i just said "ok" and walked away.

YI know from the verizon website when you sent a text it would give a status update of "received by handset"
I've never had a bad number before though, so this may be a default. Not sure if other carriers offer this either.

Edit: Sorry misread. Looks like you want a read receipt. Disregard my post

On Verizon you can see that they received the text (not necessarily that they read it, though). Usually its called delivery reports under options, or something similar.

With the new Facebook messenger, you can see when they read the text, which is kind of annoying/scary o_O (for Facebook messages only, obviously)

If I accidentally text somebody's land-line I'll get a delivery failure message in response almost immediately.

who would want that? so you know when the girl you like doesnt like you immediately, instead of waiting a few days to figure it out? :p

Heh, it's useful for people who like to just communicate and don't worry about that silly stuff.

Having to stalk her down on Facebook after she gives you a fake telephone number is a good sign she isn't interested anyway

If the number doesn't exist, you will get delivery failure. However, if the number is valid but she chose to 'turn off' texting at the carrier level, you will not get any error message back. The message will be sent normally, no error message, and she won't receive anything.

Yeah but most of these messengers like Whatsapp, Kik, BBM, etc already have read receipts. It's kinda standard. Let's not forget Messenger came from Beluga, so this was already baked into the original app itself.

Just stalk them in person, send them a text, and see if their phone responds. If not, you can run up to them and shout "AH HA!"

This question feels out of place here.

"I noticed you never returned my texts. If you are having texting problems with your phone's ROM let me know I can flash you a better one baby."
