Can you teach yourself to be ambidextrous?

I'm just curious, they're talking about ambidexterity on the radio. My left hand is absolutely useless. I can't do much of anything with it. I can't throw a baseball 5 feet with it.

So, you broke your right hand and now you're worried about how you're going to Choke the Chicken, eh?

Don't worry; nature will find a way.

Why would I use my left hand? I've got a small pillow and a sock fresh and warm out of the drier.

Heh, funny that you ask.

We had a storm on Friday that knocked out power like 6 times. We started the generator outside the station and then *it* got hit by lightning. The power went on and off like a sine wave about 10 times. It blew at least one of the monitors. Other things might be broken too.

The CD player is still acting up. I guess it doesn't like burned CDs. :)

A long time ago, being left-handed was socially unacceptable, and parents would force left handed children to become right handed by tying their left hand behind their back to force them to be right handed.

So my guess is that it is possible.

I'm learning to be ambidextrious. I've already got down golfing, archery, and using the mouse left handed. Now I'm working on writing.

I don't play many normal CDs, but I don't remember having any problems. I don't think we can pull off the ad trade thing. 60% of our sales staff quit this week. :(

Yes, it takes practice and time, but it is possible. People who break their domminant hand have no choice but to learn how to use their weak hand. I've been trying to teach myself to be ambidextrous on and off for a while. It's supposed to be good for your brain as it forces more connections on the other side of your brain to be made.

I had a friend who had an ear infection, became ambidextrous and when it went away so did the abidextrous. Weird.

Yes, one can teach themselves to be ambidextrous. I can do just about everything with both hands, except that I suck at writing and throwing with my left since I have not practiced much with it. There are other activities I am better at with my left than my right such as pool. I suck at pool right handed. As for golf, I can play either way and shoot roughly the same score.

I have always been more-or-less ambidextrous . . . however, in High School, I deliberately taught myself to write (nicely) with my left hand - in fact, several teachers accused me of having someone else write my papers as the writing styles would abruptly change from sloping right to sloping left. :)

You can always significantly improve the dexterity of your off-hand, lots of practice and use. Whether you can improve dexterity to such a degree that you're off-hand is every bit as good as the right hand, that depends on your genes/brain/etc, but its not likely.

As others have said, you can improve your dexterity with practice. I write primarily left-handed, but I throw a ball right-handed. I mouse with my left-hand, but can do it equally well with my right. There are a lot of things where my left is dominant, and a lot of others where it's my right; however, I can pretty easily get the less dominant to perform equally.

I can mouse and write left handed, taught myself when I was having some probs with my right hand, but haven't practiced writing a little while so it's not as fluid as my right hand now.

You can do it, but you might get headaches while your brain is connecting new neurons together to help you out. Some psychologists say that if you can just teach yourself to be ambidextrous, then you'll automatically increase your IQ anywhere from 5-20 points.

It's possible to teach yourself. I have a friend who is left-handed for writing but says he does everything else right-handed.
