can you tastefully add a projector screen?

I recently bought a new home with very tall ceilings. I have several rooms that are decent sized, perfect for a giant projector screen.

I don't want it to look ghetto though.... Is there a way to tastefully do this...or perhaps maybe have a room painted white and use a wall? These are old plaster/lathe walls so it's not the smoothest surface....

I've always wanted a projector...but I'm starting to think that it might be a niche thing for me and I'd rarely use it.

I got a projector not too long ago and the wife and I settled on buying some crown molding at Home Depot and some good projector paint, then we'll use the molding as a frame for the painted on screen. It should look nice and work like a charm.

a room painted all white is the last place you want a projector. the contrast of the picture would be hideous.

they have screens that roll up if you want to have it hidden away and come down just when in use. i had a 120" screen that is permanently mounted on the wall that just stays there, however it's not like in the middle of a living room or anything. it's in my basement that is used primarily as a theater.

i use my projector a lot too, at least 3-4x a week. i use it for games and movies, and while i have a cable box down there, i really only use it for football for the most part but i'll also watch some tv down there randomly, or shows on hbo go with my xbox360. if you don't think you will use it much, then i probably wouldn't get it.

Not sure if you're trolling or not OP. Projector screens in a dedicated theater room is always the most ideal.

There are ways to get a very nice room, but if you're a cheap person you'll end up with a "ghetto" look. Any setup can look "ghetto" if you don't put effort into it no matter how much you spend.

Go read around avsforum for some ideas and see some finish products. Really unsure how in earth you'd think that just because you use a projector a setup becomes "ghetto".

I don't think he's trolling. Most people that try to force a projector into a living room space, normally have ghetto looking results. Projectors are design to be setup in a dedicated space. Anything outside of that would normally cost more just to integrate it properly and aesthetically. So like you said, if you are cheap, don't even try it.

Mount projector on ceiling, get ether a motorized screen or paint the screen on the wall with a nice looking frame around it. But that is the easy stuff, it's the wiring, speakers and other components that are harder to make look nice. But seems that the best way to go about that is building a place form them into the room, or so that they go with the room. You can do it, just takes some planning and time.

That's true and also people just in general don't know what they're doing. But I mean, we have the internet...
Google: "Dedicated Theater Room"

The FIRST result that comes up (I didn't even plan this one either I assumed it would be a home theater article) is an AVSForum link. Sometimes I feel like people don't even try to google things...

Yea, I wouldn't try to put a projector into a regular room .. They work really well in fully light controlled dedicated rooms, but, if you're talking rooms above ground that have windows and such ... unless you want to do black/dark flat paint for the whole room and blackout blinds and such, it's probably much easier, and much cheaper to just buy big LCD or Plasma

anyhow, AVSforum is a great site, I used the hell out of that site and read many thousands of posts before I set up my dedicated room. It's not very big, but it works wonderful for my purposes ...
