I just don't know how to respond to a question like this. Of course you can swim at the beach almost any time. Why would somebody be barred from swimming in the ocean for a particular month?

People swim in the sea in the UK, and it's always too chilly :p

Dunno......are you a member of the Polar Bear Club? If you are, swimming at Miami's beaches in Dec. will get you banned from the club. On the other hand, swimming at Cape Cod in December will get your membership automatically renewed for another year.

Might? - In the middle of December, you're looking at highs in the upper 70's/low 80's in Miami.

It can be chilly early in the morning and late in the evening so make sure you can dry off and put some clothes on soon afterwards. The water itself is no worse than a New England beach in the summer.

It will be cold but you can do it. I've swam in the ocean off California during December/January when we went out that way for the Rose Bowl.

Yes, confortably. Miami is located at a sub-tropical latitiude where temperatures change very little during the year.

Whoa, you're nuts! :D You can't really compare the two. The pacific is frigging cold off the California coast, especially in the winter! The water temps when you swam were probably in the high 50's! The water temp in Miami in December is in the low 70's.

Yes, but it's not as warm as most Floridians prefer. However, it all depends on the recent weather. In Miami, it is never Winter. At best, you will get a series of cold fronts which bring the temperatures down to the 60's. Sometimes, this doesn't happen all which makes the water much warmer between Dec-Feb.

as long as its not during a rare cold kick (we get down into the 20-30F range for all of 4-5 days a year, then it hops back up to low 70's) you can swim just fine all year long.

December-February are some of the best times to go to the beach in FL. Water is nice and warm.

CA on the other hand, water gets down in the low 50s during the winter. Definitely wetsuit time.

I grew up in South FL.

It's usually warm enough for most people that visit from the north to swim in but for the locals it's to cold, unless you're a surfer.

Not for very long I bet.

I remember surfing one day a couple years ago in December for about an hour and a half with a full wet suit (2/3 mil) without booties and my feet were completely numb by the time I got out. If you duck dived under 3-4 waves in succession you could easily get a cold headache. Water temps were around 52 degrees IIRC and the sets were easily head high that day.
