Can you swap hard drives without reinstalling windows?

I want to get a replacement hard drive, but don't want to reinstall windows. Could I just copy all my stuff onto the new hard drive, stick it in the old one's place, and expect it to work? Vista 64 here, if it matters.

Don't try to "copy" the files. It won't work with Windows itself. You need to use a program that's designed to clone the existing hard drive.

All hard drive makers have free utilities for cloning (working) hard drives to newer, larger ones. That's one action that shouldn't require a re-intall of Windows.
