can you still play diablo 1?

a buddy and i are thinking of playing it over again. just wondering if i buy a copy online can i still play it online?

Check out the local wal-mart, they do a pretty good job of keeping the Diablo Battlechest in stock. Its diablo 1, diablo 2 and the lord of destruction expansion all in 1 box.

As for playing online, I dont know. The last time I played Diablo online was in 2008 or 2009.

Think you can still play online... found this fairly recent advice:

"This is possible, battle.net works, however you need the latest update/patch from the Blizzard site... If you want to play with someone specific, you can connect to each other using your IP adress... if you want to play against randoms, you can create a game without a passowrd, but there arn't too many people on there these days, however everynow and then I saw others.

Good luck (and dont give up- it took us a while to work out how to make battle.net work for D1, but it definately does work)."

Hope that helps 🙂

Thinking of getting the PSX rom to play it on my phone and see if the graphics are manageable on a smaller screen, because playing it on a bigger one is just ugly.

Diablo 2 is superior in every way to its older brother. I see no reason to bother with a game that isnt being played by many people. And if you just want the single player then D2 is still better.

No, No, and more NO. Diablo II is not better in "everyway" then the original. There are a LOT of things that I like in the original Diablo over part 2.

If the guy wants to play Diablo, lets not try to stop him.

I don't blame you for wanting to go back and play D1 for old times sake. It was a great game in its day and I dumped plenty of hours into it. I actually installed it a couple of months ago and I didn't have any problems getting on battle.net with it. There was almost no one playing, but it worked 🙂

Diablo 1 didn't have anything like closed bnet. Public games were hopelessy ruined by cheaters twinked to invincibility and one-hit killers (no hostility in D1 but you are hit by friendly fire). Back in the day I spent many hours on it but very rarely in an open public game.

To answer the OP's question, yes you should be able to play online if you can find other players.

Yes, but don't bother with public games. Try to see if you can find groups of players. I tried, awhile back, and even with protections, it sucked (OK, I'm immune to death and such by trainer, but the bastard can still teleport me to places on the map I can't move from). The game works fine, but there seems to be a higher ratio of tards with trainers than there used to be (and even back in the day, I never went on Bnet w/o Diablo Guard!).

Try playing just with your friend, or hunt down other legit players.

Do NOT play public games. Griefers stay on that fucking thing with hacks that crash the game for you, all the time.

If you're gonna play, let me know. 😛 I wouldn't mind playing with some ATOT'ers.

D2 can be bought on the Blizzard website and I'm pretty sure you can download it there as well. I never looked but I think they may have D1 there as well.

I sold my battlechest last year. was still playing it. But I can't go back to that again now so many other choices available.

disagree. diablo1 has superior atmosphere. i'd also argue the storytelling (via the various books you find) is better. the voicing for those books is *AWESOME*

plus you get griswold. when he's not a zombie.

i actually played through it a little while back and i think everything about D1 was better than D2 outside of the actual gameplay. even then, i felt the overall experience of playing D1 was more rewarding. playing through it with friends sounds awesome

+1 on that.

There is NO way that D2 can compare to the atmosphere of Diablo 1. Everything from the demons that you had to fight, to the voice overs, to the story telling.

Overall, diablo II was a let down in the atmosphere and story telling department.

agreed the overall lonely and total dark atmosphere really brought me into the game. D1 was superior over D2.

Diablo 1 had a killer atmosphere. The fact that you start out the game by going into a dungeon, and continue down from there was the key. Diablo 2 basically just sent you into the grasslands outside of town, and really lacked the same creepiness that Diablo 1 had for first time players.

For multiplayer, Diablo 2 was far better. Closed (hack / cheat resistant) Battle.net realms, multiple classes, tons of weapons and armor, semi-challenging bosses, great skill choices, etc.

For single player, Diablo 1 is hard to beat, primarily because Diablo 2 is a bore to play alone (IMO). Diablo 1 had better voice acting, a better creepy atmosphere, simple skill / spell choices, and normal monsters that could be challenging (those stupid zombie dog things that spit acid at you in the catacombs... argh!)

I don't think D2 is necessarily way better than D1 or anything but D1 had a flavor and atmosphere all its own. It was really really fun to play. Lets face it it was the reason why many of us bought D2 when it came out. Remember the original Warcraft game? Simple yet extremely fun. Graphics may be a bit dated now but its just so fun to play with. Zug Zug!

There is an 'old' Diablo Battlechest that included Diablo I and is no longer available, and a 'new' Diablo Battlechest that does not include it, because of support issues they say.

Well if that's the case, they shouldn't sell D2 either lol. It was kind of a pain to get working properly on Windows 7. In order to run it full screen, I had to change the video mode to 2d, attempt to launch the game.exe without changing anything, then launch the game.exe after changing it to run in XP SP 3 mode with desktop composition disabled. Running it in fullscreen gave me inverted colors after a certain amount of time, even with the sven glide wrapper.

Running it in a window works much better. I can just run the game.exe shortcut with the -w tag in XP SP 3 mode with desktop composition disabled, and it works fine. A nice thing about the sven glide wrapper is that it allows you to pretty much double the size of the game in window mode so it scales it to a higher resolution.
