Let's say you have only one slot, but you have 2 devices you want to plug into the slot simultaneously. It there a way to make it happen, and if so, what are the drawbacks? I don't need to do this now and hopefully won't have to (by sticking to usb hardware) but I'm curious just in case.

No way.

Most PCMCIA slots will accept two cards, as long as the cards don't block eachother. For instance, I have two PCMCIA devices: an eSATA card and CompactFlash adapter. The CF card slides in fully and flush with the laptop, however the eSATA card has plugs that stick out and up from the slot, blocking entry to the top slot. If I place the CF card in first, then the eSATA, I can use both. Try that

No. The newer laptops now have but one CardBus slot. No splitting. Just take turns. Actually, with USB 2 and Firewire, they are becoming obsolescent. Sort of like floppies were three years ago. The data flow rate through PCMCIA sorta sucks.
