I thought the boost only differed in clocks and bios, so it should work, as they have the same GPU?

Its the boost feature that may cause issues. I dont believe the 640 ti supports it which may cause issues there are also some other minor differences other that gpu/mem clocks

650 ti boost has 24 rops and and 192 bit bus. 650 ti has 16 rops and 128 bit bus and no boost. there is no way the would work together.

Ah ok, I didn't know the cores were different and such, I thought it was just like the 7950 boost cards.

AFAIK, SLI has never allowed cross-model SLI. Even when one is a rebadge (8800GT, 9800GT).

Not entirely true, as the 9800 GTX could be with 9800 GTX+, and the 9800 GTX+ with some GTS 250s.
