can you set what type of role your computer is for xp?

No, WindowsXP and the NT kernel specifically does not rely upon such settings.
There are however, settings for Processor Scheduling (Programs vs. Background Services) and Memory Usage (Programs vs. System Cache) those settings effect many of the same functions the Computer "Role" did under Win9X.
 
thx for the help i was stuck wondering about the computers role for a couple weeks now.also which settings are best Programs vs. Background Services-Programs vs. System Cache with 256mb ram.
