Some of the newer ones have power settings too, some even go up to 11, but it's really hard on the batteries. Was checking reviews on Amazon and you only get like 5 shots with standard AA batteries if it's set to stun on power 11. You can pay a bit more to get the lithium ion battery pack.

I think the question was "What's the default setting?" Maybe it's a flashlight until you set it. Kind of embarrassing when Cardassians are breaking in your quarters, and you just turn on the lights for them.

I'm watching TNG on BBC America (apparently they think Americans love three things: Top Gear, Kitchen Nightmares and Star Trek) and it suddenly strikes me that I've never heard anything other than 'set phasers to stun!' Well, what are they on by default? Can you set phasers to 'immolate?'

These are the things I need to know. The more I watch TNG (after not having really watched it since I was a kid), a consistent theme seems to be that I am stunned (no pun intended) by the depth of the characters and some of the more philosophical and allegorical plot stuff...but the logic/science part really never was that great. Which is weird, because typical nerd complaints about something like the Abrams Star Trek films are 'but where is the SCIENCE?!' not 'why isn't this making me think about the depth of emotion and intellectual thinking amongst the main characters?!'

Just sayin'. This is what I think about while I poop.

edit: to make subjects/verbs is now are totally in agreeingment.

Yes, watch any episode involving the Borg. The federation doesn't hold back on them after the first encounter.

Lol, the default setting should be what it was last set at but is generally "stun" unless in a very tactical scene. (e.g. First Contact when the black lady takes Picard's phaser and it is set to vaporize from a previous scene). I think phasers have 15 settings representing a gradient of power from light stun to medium skin burns, to heavy burns, to vaporize. In general, only the phaser rifles have enough energy to be set to vaporize for multiple shots.

Everytime someone sets one to overload: "Why do they even HAVE that setting?????"
If your cellphone could have a "self-destruct" setting that would turn its li-po battery into a grenade, don't you think that would be really handy sometimes?:whiste:
