under, you mean on the ground? near the mailbox? why not just put it into the mailbox, like normal?

I highly doubt it. Are you thinking of some huge package that wouldn't fit in the mailbox or something? Take it to the post office instead.

Try this:

Put the person your sending the letter to in the "Return address" spot in the top left hand side. Then put your name and address in the "Send to" part in the middle.

Drop it in a box with no stamp and see where it goes!

If you're on a first-name basis with your route's regular carrier ("Bill" in my case) and he's a friendly guy, things like this can be arranged.

As in, a package of some sort? Carriers should accept Priority and Express packages, when pickup is requested. More details here.

I put the outgoing mail IN the mailbox and put up the flag. When I've been in places that had the big blocks of locked boxes, there was usually a place to stick the outgoing mail in a box with a slot.

No I mean regular letters you want to mail to other people. And I say under because some mailboxes have a holder underneath that you sometimes see for newspapers... but regardless... if you put them out there for the mailman with a stamp and everything, why wouldn't they take it ? How come the USPS isn't full service like that ? This isn't a laziness issue, I'm just wondering why they don't do it or make plans to do it. I mean, they've made and executed plans to take away the closest 2 mailboxes available to us.... ... ....

Have you ever run into your mail carrier? Ask him/her what to do with outgoing mail, or ask at the office of your apt complex if you live in one.

Just put it INSIDE the mailbox, they open the thing up anyways.

You put it IN the mailbox and you lift the red flag on the side. Wow, just wow. Perhaps you're in an apartment complex with common mailboxes, but if not you should probably be taken out back and put out of our misery :)

Yeah i used to do this in California, you put the flag up and the mail went away.
Now in NY the same way as the OP, there are no red flags on most mail boxes, hell i don't even know if that actually works here in NY.

You forgot the last part about going to jail for mail fraud :)

I've seriously never seen a mailbox around here that even has a red flag. I always thought that was something you see on tv. :) And even then, I thought it was used when the mailman puts something in your mailbox so you know it's been delivered for the day.

That's what i said. I just have this white mail box attached to the house, not like on a poll by the sidewalk. I did have a mail box with a red flag back in california and the red flag thing worked, but back in california the post office was about 20 minute drive unlike 5 minutes here in NY, plus i can walk about 200 feet and there is a Mail box on the side of the street.

Geesh guys. I thought this was common knowledge. Either you put the mail inside the mail box (not what I do) or you put it so that the mail box lid closes on the mail so the mailman can see it.

mmm i guess i have to try it, either way leaving the mail under the lid during winter time is not good.

On my parent's house we have a rather old mailbox on the house, with a heavy lid. All you do is leave it so there's about an inch of the mail sticking out, if not less. I guess if you have one of those mailboxes with the thin metal, you should definitely keep it completely in the mailbox.
