I much prefer an iPad to a 7" device or even a 10" android tablet. I hate, Hate, HATE the larger android tablet form factor.
I have a SGS2 phone and an iPad2 tablet, an Asus i7 based laptop for gaming, and my old desktop computer has been relegated to a DLNA server.

Yeah but having a phablet eliminates the need to carry a tablet alongside a phone. I also disagree with the phone being too big for calling, txting, searching, and mapping.

Note 2 does not eliminate the need to carry a tablet. You're still better off reading/watching movies off a 10" screen.

A tablet was not necessary to begin with for 99% of people. But if you separate the lines between a phone and a tablet more, then yes then the tablet serves more of a purpose, but you're never going to have a product that bridges the two successfully without compromises.

This topic was about 7" vs. 10" tablet though, and whether or not you can see yourself needing both.

I still think regardless of whatever screen size you're comfortable with on your phone, it is going to be really hard to justify both a 10" and 7" tablet in addition to that.

added: I guess when he said "having a phablet eliminates the need to carry a tablet alongside a phone", I understood it as: you may get a tablet, but it's not for something mobile, which means might as well get it with a 10" screen.

I already have two Android smartphones (myTouch 4G Slide, Galaxy S II) Transformer TF101, my desktop, HTPC and server.

I do want a square-ish 7" Android tablet. It would live inside my dashboard.

Well yeah I'm of the camp that believes the 10" form is the right way to go. It's nicer for reading and surfing and stuff. I do agree weight could be a factor but we all know the iPad is on the heavier side of the spectrum.

The 7" form factor starts blurring with larger phones and I believe with even 4.8" phones it starts to come close. I don't see a 4.8" replacing a 7", but I don't see a need for both 7" and 10" if I have a 4.8" phone already. I could see the 7" being more useful if you have only a 3.5" iPhone which reading might be annoying on.

The OP deals with a Windows 8 tablet and I find that to be very different. The reason why I get an Android tablet versus an iPad are two different things. My CM9 TouchPad was for modding and installing crazy stuff. My iPad 2 was for consumption. You can mod your Android tablet, but I'm pretty sure the Windows 8 tablet will be locked down. For me that already spells two different purposes. Even if it weren't for ROM flashing, there's still a lot of customization and I see the Android tablet as a eccentric gadget. Meanwhile the Windows 8 tablet won't have all content available, so it's really an apples and oranges decision.

If you're only evaluating form factor, you should ask yourself if there was a Nexus 7 and 10, would you have both? Or if there's an iPad mini and an iPad regular, would you have both?

Having a 7" and 10" for the same platform has no appeal to me and probably doesn't to most folks. I have a "new" iPad, a Touchpad, and a BB Playbook that I use personally, and while I love the fact that having a 7" and a 10" gives me size options depending on the usage scenario, how I use them is much more about the OS. The iPad is my main content consumption device, the Touchpad gives me an alternate/experimental platform (WebOS & Android), and the Playbook is the perfect work companion for the corporate Blackberry (ex.- Bridge mode allows me to access company mail from a tablet when I otherwise couldn't (no EAS on personal devices where I work)). The only way I could see myself doubling up on multiple form factors for the same OS would be on devices for family members (ex. - I have an iPad, and I get the kids an iPad mini due to price difference)

I really like the size of 7" tablets, but they're too small for real productivity work.

I am excited for the Surface tablets (10.6"!), but I am a bit worried that it'll be too much to use comfortably in bed/on the couch. I guess we'll see.

I kind of imagine the sweet spot might be a 5" phone + 10" tablet, and a 13" laptop. Just don't ask me how I'll be carrying all that cargo...
