Can you see the milky way from your home?

This article brings this up.

Definitely something most take for granted now. It's amazing how far light pollution stretches. On approaching the FL coast (Miami) on a clear night I can see the light pollution over 40 miles out. :Q

Hundreds of miles offshore (like right NOW) viewing is superb (minus the clouds). Back in November 2006 the Leonids were active and I was watching and one actually was bright enough to be seen reflecting off the water and it made a hissing noise like a mad cat. :Q

the only time I've been able to see it with the naked eye was that one summer I spent out in Appalachia.

always wondered if there were cruises or anything that just went out into the ocean to look at stars.

I rented a cabin a few years ago. We spent a few hours sitting on the roof just looking at the stars, it was so amazing.

Went camping last year and spent another few hours looking at the stars.

I can probably only see a few hundred stars when I live now. :(

Sadly, not here in Kahleeforneeya's Central Valley. Between the light pollution and air pollution, it's difficult to see more than a couple dozen stars.

When we lived in Western Wyoming, the night sky was ablaze with start of all sizes and colors...and the Milky Way gleamed like a neon light in the sky...

ok, I wax poetic...sort of...

From parts of Hawaii, you can see bazillions of stars in the sky, including the Milky Way.

Considering my home is part of the Milky Way galaxy... yes, I can. Don't even have to go outside to see it, either!

Too much light pollution here. I have to drive out of town to see the stars. One good thing about living in a dirt poor country, no electricity! My cousins and I would go out to see the stars in the sky, we would go "Uh...ah" as the meteorites streaked across the sky. The fireflies would put up quite a show sometimes too. It seems like it was yesterday, and yet so long ago.

Too much light pollution here. Back on the central of the big island though, that was a beautiful night sky.

New Zealand.... ah, hell yes.
I'd like to see a clear night sky in the southern hemisphere once. The southern hemisphere is looking towards the center of the galaxy while the northern hemisphere looks outwards, right?

That's right. We can also see the Milky Way's two satellite galaxies (Large and Small Magellanic clouds), although you need to be well away from the cities to see them. They are large in the sky but quite dim. I'd love to see a Northern Hemisphere sky some day :)

But Rubycon, where would we get those satellite pictures with brightly lid continent if not for the light pollution? :)

Not a chance. It is amazing how much is not visible in the night sky here compared to 100 miles west up in the mountains. I will never forget the shock of seeing the night sky in the middle of the Atlantic on an aircraft carrier when we were doing lights-out ops. It was incredible the number of stars that were visible, closest I have seen to it on land is in West Virginia in the middle of nowhere.

Went to Fiji on my honeymoon last year. Holy crap I have never seen so many stars, not even up in northern MI away from the cities. In SE MI it's hard to see much of anything in the sky.
