Can you save shows from a DVR to the computer?

If I were to get a DVR, probably a scientific atlantic cause I have time warner. Can I take those shows off the DVR and send them to my computer to save them?



I know, I know I can build a DVR using a SFF case but realistically I don't want to consider that as an option at this time.
 
With ReplayTV you can, Tivo you can, not sure about the proprietary DVRs... you might have a hard time.
