Yes, my wifes boots to a mini-os which just has the video player and such.

Yes - Quickplay is OS independent. It runs without the system being booted in anything.

When the comp is shutdown, just hit the quickplay button at the top. My HP9500t just boots into a mini-vista and runs quickplay. Very quick boot and does great with DVD's and my stored music.

Think about those portable DVD players you can buy that are not computers. It's no big deal to give that capability to a laptop.
