Can you run 2 different size sticks of memory?

I had always thought that it was a no-no but my friend wants to buy a 512 stick and already has 2 128's I know for sure it is better to run the same but are you supposed to run it with different sizes?

You can combine them. It's best to make sure they have the same speed ratings (i.e. CAS, RAS, etc). If you want to run dual channel then it's important that they be identical. As cheap as memory is, he should just buy 2 512MB sticks and sell the 2 128's.

My next question is what if you have 2 sticks a part of a kit 256(2X128) Is it okay to split those up?

Yep, those kits are just sold to make sure they work in dual-channel mode. You can have one stick in one PC and the other in another PC.

yea those kits are just a marketing thing because those companies know how people can't get enough of dual channel ddr lol.
