Can you reverse payment on a Visa purchase if item came damaged?

Ok lets say you bought a large television online and it was shipped to you and when you opened the box it was damaged. And lets say the ppl who sold it to you won't take it back for an exchange, or refund.

Can you reverse payment with your visa? (COmpass debit card to be exact, w/visa logo) Do they offer any type of protection like that?
 
Not sure about Visa, but I have an American Express and they have a 30 or 60 or 90 day (not sure which) return policy so I can return ANYTHING that I purchase on my AMEX card to AMEX and they will refund my money if the original seller will not.
 
You have to try and resolve it with the merchant first. If that does not work, be sure you keep records of the conversations you've had, as well as any written correspondence. You should have taken pics of the damaged item.
If you cannot resolve it, then tell the credit card company that you wish to dispute the charge. You should be fine, if you have your ducks in a row.
 
Yes you absoloutely can. It's called a chargeback and some issuing credit card companies will allow for chargeback, even months after the purchase. Just make sure you have decent records of everything. Chargebacks happen a lot more often than most people know, and are not difficult to do. Just phone your credit card company and ask them for their policy on chargebacks and what information you need. Where did you purchase your TV from online?

 
I purchased the television from Amazon.

Their policy on large televisions is that they cannot be returned, but must be inspected during delivery and if there is a problem the delivery must be rejected. After that then the television cannot be returned.

Well I inspected the delivery and it looked fine so I signed.

It wasn't until the next day that we set up the tv stand and started to move the TV to it. Once we started to move the tv, shattered plastic started falling out from within. LOTS of it. Something is REALLY broken inside there. This was hidden damage that there was no way I could have seen during initial delivery.

If Amazon sticks to its policy then im screwed because I accepted delivery... Thats why im researching a chargeback just in case.

Then you should be alright. Call the 800 number on the back of the card, and explain the situation to them. Tell them that the TV is damaged internally, and you could not possibly have seen that during the delivery since the box was closed, and that Amazon won't take it back now, and you'd like to do a chargeback. You'll likely have to call Amazon again to explain that you're doing the chargeback with approval from your bank/ccard company, and once they find that out they may be more willing to accept it back since they'll lose the money anyways.
 
I don't mean to be an A-Hole, but why not just get a credit card. 1 card is fine and keep the limit not too high and not too low. I find the benefits are much greater than debit cards unless you are a person who thinks credit cards don't need to be paid off. As for me I was never tempted to order more than the credit card's limit or not pay it back monthly.
You might even save $ as credit cards will be great for gas, every day items, and even large purchases.
Good luck on getting your money back as I also don't like that "inspection upon delivery" crap. It takes a while to inspect a TV thourghly and i'm sure the delivery guy would like to stand around watching someone set up the TV. And in return i'm sure the receiptiant wouldn't like to bug the delivery guy like that.

As Sphexi says call your card's number and see what you can do.
 
THanks guys, you give me hope! I just cant afford to be caught with a broken tv...

I was thinking maybe id reverse charges then use the money to repair this tv and send any additional funds back to amazon... Seems fair, but either way I cant afford another tv with this broken one sitting here. So this gives me hope...
 
Thats the worse return policy I've seen. I wouldn't ever take a chance on a big purchase like that, especially a tv (assuming its not a small tele).
 
I don't see how Amazon's rules could supercede Visa's protection. You also have rights, by law. If I were a betting man, I would bet that you will get your money back. 😉

I believe if you entered some sort of PIN, you used the debit part of the card. If you did not, you probably used the credit function.

It's easier to tell when you bought things at a store, as the way I understand it, signature=credit, PIN=debit, but obviously you cannot sign an internet/phone order, so I would assume that if there was no PIN, it must be credit.
