Can you reuse an MP3 player's HD?

So its another year and another Archos has died on me. My black Archos XS-202s has a cracked display and looks ready to leak. I've always loved this thing cause its SO small for a 20gb.

Fortunately, the HD still works fine and I was able to get all my data off of it last night. Since RMA probably won't happen this time around (last time it was a dead HD after dropping it onto concrete), is there any way I can yank out the hard drive and reuse it? Its a Hitachi, 1.8" form factor, probably ATA-6 ZIF. Are there 1.8" drive enclosures available?

The drive may have a Compact Flash compatible connector. If you can't RMA the thing why not open it up? Hitachi must have 40 or 60GB 1.8's out now, see if you can find something online about people replacing the drive with higher capacity models.

this thread talks about replacing the hitachi driev with a toshiba.

Edit: However that kinda disagrees with humanure's info (actually a link off the page he mentioned):
Hitachi 1.8" drives have the same pin configuration as the 2.5", while Toshiba 1.8" drives use their own special pin connectors. Toshiba 1.8" drives are widely used in Apple iPod mp3 players, which means you could use these enclosure to backup your iPod music.

If that quote is true then any 2.5" (laptop type) harddrive enclosure would work.

I'm sure you can find exactly what you're after with a little google'fu

might not be worth the trouble with drives being as cheap as they are these days. 2.5" ide converters are cheaper and easier to come by than 1.8"

It's a UK website, but it will tell you what sort of enclosure you need for your drive, and you can then search US places to see if there are any available.
I bought a 1.8" enclosure for my 40gig Toshiba drive from my old iRiver.
