can you replace a dell server fan with a standard fan?

I have an older dell poweredge 600SC server, the rear 120x38mm fan died, now when the computer boots i get a bios error saying the fan is not detected, which is kind of annoying and there dosent look like a way to disable it in the bios. the replacement fan is 30$ on ebay for the original part, can I rig in a regular 3 pin fan? If thats the case i would also love the replace the noisy HSF which has the same 3 pin proprietary connector.

That looks larger than a standard connector, so I would guess it wouldn't be immediately compatible, but I would also guess that you could solder the connector on the dead fan onto the wires of a standard fan and get the same result. (assuming those dell fans don't have some special circuitry or anything, which might be the case)

I'd look for a second opinion though, this is just some musings.
