Can you redeem frequent flier miles for 1 biz class ticket instead of round trip economy?

I have done it quite a few times. It was cheaper (in FF miles) than a R/T coach ticket.

no. you cannot redeem a 1-way award travel.

you can however redeem mileage or certificate upgrades towards individual segments of your travel

or a roundtrip with 1 direction in premium cabin

I just got my niece a round trip to Detroit->Istanbul, business class, for 100,000 miles + US$148.00 on American. She left Jan 6th, will return in May.

The flight was booked one week in advance.
