Can you recommend some good PC games for an 8 year old?

The Hot Wheels Stunt Track Driver series is cool. So is the Crash one, where you try to ram your car into things and blow stuff up. :)

My kids like Sonic CD, Simpsons Virtual Springfield, Toy Story, Monster Truck Madness 2, Dangerous Creatures, and of course all the Reader Rabbits, JumpStart ect. (Lego has a new one as well)
Of course they would also like Q3, UT, Sin, Half-Life, CS, ect. if they could figure out my passwords!

I'd seen 8 year olds play some pretty violent stuff. If your kid is into the kiddie stuff, then buy him what was mentioned above. Otherwise, it's probably better to get him some sports, racing, puzzle, or cartoonish games(Pokemon). I'd get him a N64, since that system seems to be aimed at little kids. Get him games like Pokemon, Zelda, and some of the other ones. There aren't many violent games on the N64. The N64 can be found for under 100 dollars online or 100 dollars at a store plus tax.

Some of these guys are joking... I suggest these games:

Monkey Island 3
Day of the Tentacle
Sam & Max Hit the Road

They are all Lucasarts point and click adventure games with cartoony graphics and you can't really die or get killed in any of them! They are also some of my favorite games, and I'm 23!

Well, aside from my personal favorite, Virtual Sex With Nikki... Eight is not so young, so... I'm a little out of date on the new games, but these would work:

Strategy:
Roller Coaster Tycoon or Sim Theme Park
Dungeon Keeper 2
Any Maxis Sims (esp. The Sims)
Railroad Tycoon II: Second Century
AOE2: Conquerers
Civ II: Test of Time, Civ II.V: Call to Power, or Alpha Centauri
Settlers III
Chess Master 12000
Pandora's Box (great puzzle game)

Not much for Shooters/Action myself, but:
Virtually any Shooter not rated MA/17
Seven Kigndoms 2, Dune 2000 (virtually the same)
Rainbow 6

Sports:
NHL 2K
Madden Football 2K
Deer Hunter 12
fishing
Need For Speed 5
MS Flight Simulator 2K

Kiddie games:
Frogger
Game of Life
LEGO series
Micromachines 3(?)
Re-Volt (RC racing)
Where In the F**k is Carmen SanDiego

Drop me a line if you have any trouble finding one of these you want ;)

Alice? No way. She'd probably be happy with demos to see what type of games she likes. go to fileplanet.com and grab some various stuff

Talking about games for fun.

I found out that kids like most of the decent games.

The main issue is that most games are not flexible enough in there setting, which discourage a lot of kids because they can not win.

Most kids like driving: Microsoft Midtown Madness, and Midtown madness2, is excellent for introducing kids into driving (not just racing).

There is a Cruise mode in both versions that can introduce them to driving, and exploring without competition. They can learn to maneuver in Chicago, San Francisco, and London. When they are comfortable and ready, they can try the races.

The general idea is to find games that can be set to some kind of ?tutorial? mode, before the action starts, otherwise (at this age or early) you end with a frustrated Kid.

eh. Frustrated kid will help them to be a better frustrated adult... Why delude them into believing they can win? :D

The kid might enjoy something really simple, like http://fluid.org/bubble97.zip. It's like the old arcade games where you try to match sets of colored balls to knock them down, and the ceiling is gradually coming down for a timelimit effect. Free too.

My seven year old likes the hotwheels games, the sonic hedgehog games, and sometimes Rayman2. Gorgeous in Glide on any voodoo card. the older Raymans aren't much. The starwars games too, like podracer(?)

A lot depends on the kid's disposition- mine just wants straight action, don't confuse or frustrate him with any strategy, learning or subplots.....

Copy the CD's if you can, stash the originals. Kids can destroy anything....except N64 cartridges, which seem to be bulletproof.
