Can you recommend a DVD-ROM?

My current DVD ROM, which I have had for 2 years, is on its last leg. I'd like to replace it with another beige one. Can you recommend one that will last longer than mine, or do they all have about the same life span?

Yea pretty much, let me guess, grinding noises?

No, I put a disc in and it just spins around for a few minutes. Then if I go to My Computer to open the disc, it says the drive is empty. It usually takes 4 or 5 tries of taking the disc out and putting it back in until it finally reads it.

Ahhh, yea I had that happen once, I've had 2 Samsung DVD drives, no problems at all, NEC and Samsung make some great DVD drives, just give em a look on the egg 🙂

Thanks for the tip. Do you know anything about the slot loading drives? They seem pretty cool, just wondering if they work any better or worse.

They're cool, but dust can be an issue with those, and I personally just don't like them, but that's just me, if you think it's for you, by all means give em a look. 🙂

I had a very similar problem with an old CDRW... and when i upgraded the system, i put the CDRW aside. Then when i needed it, i thought i would use it temporariy (it worked inconsistently), but it seems to be working just fine now... been months, and made over 50 burns so far, and absolutely perfect. I'm not sure if it was the OS, cable, or some other problem in the old system, but it seems to be working jsut fine now.

I've had problems with Pioneer slot-load drives dying. I had a Pioneer slot CD-ROM that didn't last long at all, and I've got a SCSI Pioneer slot DVD-ROM that has become very picky about media.

Lite-On DVD-ROM's seem to be very good drives. Samsung drives get decent reviews, but I think Lite-On is usually better:

In most cases, I would be inclined to spend another $20 and get a 52X CD-R / 16X DVD-ROM

Pioneer makes killer DVD drives.

I recommend the 106S if you can still get it.. I like the 106S better than my newer 120S from Pioneer... but either way they both work great.

I mainly just like the loading mechanism of the 106S better.... and I think it rips a little better. but both do their job and they do it well.
