I was watching TLC last night and there is this company in Montana that will ship you 3.5 pounds of gravel that contains loose gem stones. The guy that gets his order every month says he find atleast 20 stones in every order. They need to be cut be he was showing stones that were worth over $2000. Can you really make money off of something like this or is it just a hobby?

Edit: It's $95 for the 3.5 pounds of gravel/loose stones.

Here's how I figure,

It's unlikely there's a large profit to be made from gemstones found in gravel as, if there were, the gravel company would have already done it.

second, the site claims people go there to look for sapphires already...odds of one coming to your doorstep are slim

third, let's say I gave you a sapphire worth 1000 dollars, do you know anywhere that will give you 1000 dollars for it? It's like selling a baseball card. In terms of practicality, it's pretty useless, but many guides will tell you that you have a 1000 dollar card. How many dealers/resellers/collectors do you know that would spend 1000 dollars on a card? Usually they're looking to find the next michael jordan rookie card and waiting for it to bump in value.

You're right that there probably isn't money but I always thought it would be cool to find a loose stone and have it cut and made into a piece of jewelry.

I use to go to the store at the mall that had shelves of stones and you could look through them. I would spend a lot of time just looking at the different stones. I might pick up a bucket and go through it to see if I can find anything exciting. It will atleast get me out of the house this summer and into the backyard.

well, you could always dig a lake or install something in the backyard that requires gravel...then order the gravel and cross your fingers.
