Can you PS2 owners help me out?

I'm buying my adopted nephew a PS2 DVD remote and I'm not sure if I need to buy him a 8meg memory card too? He just bought the system around a month ago, so it's a new model.

The back of the remote package it says "A memory card is required for use with PS2 console model numbers SCPH-30001 and SCPH-35001 GT. A memory card is not required for models SCPH-30001 R."

I'm guessing the older model needed the memory card and the newer ones don't? Is this right?

Thanks for the help!

Jugs

btw: I can't ask him to look at the system as it's a surprise.

Get a third-party DVD controller with pass through. Its well worth it, I have having to switch although I don't play Movies on my PS2 anymore, I have a regular DVD player...

The need for a memory card was because the dvd remote package came with an update cd that would store new DVD drivers on a memory card to support all those extra buttons on the remote. I assume that the "R" model doesn't need it because they would have updated the onboard drivers instead of shipping old dvd drivers.
