This is really dumb of me, I know, I know. Yes I am embarrassed to have to ask.

I would appreciate help in installing an operating system in Microsoft Virtual PC 2004.

I have a set of DVD's that have a backup of an old computer that I want to install in the Virtual PC, so as to harvest some data out of there.

Here's where I'm stuck:
When I run Virtual PC I get a "command prompt" style box on the monitor which says,
"Reboot and select proper boot device or insert boot media in selected boot device?, but that doesn't seem to work.

Any help appreciated. Thanks.

Is your media boot-able? Its just like installing an OS on your 'real' PC.

Did you set your boot device correctly? I just finished installing XPPro SP2 on my VM and the problem I was having was at the top of the VM console it lets you select your "CD drive" that's in use. I was set on the wrong "CD drive". It also lets you use ISO images instead of a CD ROM.

Also as tw1164 said it's the exact same thing as installing on a blank machine. You need a windows disk or Linux or whatever to install. If you're trying to put an image that you have on a blank VM you will need to use a boot CD for your imaging software (Ghost or whatever you use) and then tell the imaging software to copy your image onto the virtual drive.
