i'm running win2k pro right now and playing games are fine, but i've read that games won't run on advanced server. can someone give me some feedback? thanks.
You could if you wanted to. You can install DirectX 8, but why would you want to? It is ment to be a server OS, not a gaming OS. You can host Unreal games, or even Quake, but I would never actually play the games from the OS.
Yes it should work. The only difference between Pro and AS would be the extra services on the Server editions. Otherwise everything else is excatly the same.
Win2k Pro supports 2 CPUs
Win2k Server 4 CPUs
Win2k Adv.Server 8 CPUs
(DC Server is 32 if you care)
Win2k pro allows only 10 remote users connected, server and Aserver are more (though I don't know how many).
Other than that pretty much the only difference is the default Services that run (which you can customize).
The only reason a piece of software would work on Win2k Pro and not AS is if the vendor specifically locked out for that version of Win2k (they'd do this to make you buy the more expensive "server" version of their software). As far as I can tell no games do this though.
no reason to even have advanced server installed unless your using the extra services it supports, you arent getting any more stability out of it vs w2k pro.
