The Indian state of Uttar Pradesh is attempting to set a world record by planting 10 million trees in a single day on Tuesday.

Officials say the plantings are designed to raise awareness of the need to protect the environment.

In all, 10,266,736 saplings will be planted at 9,320 sites across Uttar Pradesh's 70 districts.

The record stands at 852,587 trees, planted in 6,284 locations in Tamil Nadu state in 2006.

If you had 10 million people w/ 10 million trees you can do it quite easily.

That would be 10 million trees in an instant.
It doesn't take 1 person 1 day to plant 1 tree :p

Well not exactly an instant. Maybe an hour or two if they had to manually dig all the holes and place it in at once but quite easily achievable.

These arent the semi-matured trees you see at your local garden shop. These are probably young pine saplings that are about 6in tall.

These aren't big trees.

Experienced forestry workers can plant over 1,000 trees per hour.

It only takes about 30 seconds to plant a tree. With a pick, scrape the area clear, stick the blade in the ground, pull it back, slide the roots in, remove the pick.

<-- did it up in the Sierra Nevadas.

In a well cleared area with soft ground, if the person was hustling alot, I can see it.

10 million trees in one day? no way.

first off where are the saplings being grown?

second it would take days to issue out all those trees.

Experienced tree planters can do about 2k or so a day (newbies less than 1k) in a 10+ hour shift from what I've read. So they'll need a workforce of about 5000-10000 people, maybe more if shifts are short and they pick people off the street. In a country of a billion, no problem. I'm more concerned about where they're finding so much land...

Wow. This is an awesome world record to set!

Realistically though, how many of the 10 million do you think will survive? 50%? 60%? Even so, 5-6 million new trees is never a bad thing!

That's is a great world record. You hear about so many silly records, like the world's biggest cookie or whatever. Those are nice records when people are starving elsewhere

Can't tell whether you're being serious or sarcastic.

Given the rate at which trees are being cut down and forests are dying, planting trees is awesome.

Hahaha. In India, finding 10 million people shouldn't be difficult at all. It's less than 1% of the population!

I was thinking of a plane that fired biodegradable cartridges into the dirt. Manpower works too, I guess.

Sorry, you're right. I wasn't clear, I should have split those two thoughts. The planting trees is absolutely a great thing!!

In contrast, the world's biggest cookie reference was where I was taking issue. Those are silly records.
