Can you password protect folders on a flash drive??

Ok, there's no 'security' forum here so I'm posting it here.

I'm using XP Pro, I have a usb flash drive, and I want to password protect one of the folders on it...is this possible at all??

I had an old Targus drive that let me set a portion of it password protected. Not sure if they still make ones with that option though.

My sandisk flash drive came with a utility that encrypys files but I have never used it. I'm guessing some other drives have this too.

there are some flash drives that come with encryption software, best buy sells a geek squad brand flash drive, i believe its the u3, and it has an operating system on it, in which you can install programs and launch from any computer the device is plugged into.

I have a new flash drive that has a downloadable utility that will let you create a hidden encrypted partition. I haven't gotten it yet (the utility).

The info card that came with the drive says the utility "allows you to size and create a hidden partition only accessible using your password. Security software and Windows 98SE driver software available for download from http://www.pexagontech.com/security.php.

I imagine you can go there and get it even if you don't have the drive.

The site has two versions of the utility depending on what version of their flash drive you have, so it may be that neither version will work with your drive. You can try, though.

An alternative would be to zip/rar the files and put a password to it.

why not try true encrypt?

so I could make a container folder on the drive, then encrypt just that portion?

you make a portion of the drive to be encrypted.

I agree. Use True Crypt. From the menu, go to "Tools -> Traveller Disk Setup". The cool part is that you can name the container file with any extension. My USB thumbdrive looks like it has a large music file on it and my PC has an ISO image container.
