Can you network a house using CAT4 cabling?

Howard

I have a spool of CAT4 (it says FT-4, I believe it's the same thing) and I was wondering if I could network all my rooms with it. Is CAT5 needed, or CAT5e/6? I think the maximum runs would be less than 150'.

TIA

That's highly inadvisable if you're running fast ethernet, although there's an extremely slim chance it might work. CAT5 is the standard for 100Mbps fast ethernet, while CAT5E is able to support Gigabit ethernet. CAT4 is only rated for normal eternet use(10BaseT)

Plus a spool of cat5 is really not that expensive. Under $70 for a 1000' depending on where you shop.

Although I have yet to see it be proven, I would get the CAT5e over CAT5 just incase some day you want to run gigabit ethernet.
