Can you name a successful female cyberathlete?

i'm doing a project for my women's studies course, where we talk about a female athlete who is changing an area of competition thought previously to be only males.

i was wondering if there were any successful female video gamers. it would be fun to do a report on one. i suppose it is debatable on what is considered "athlete" but my argument is that they are in a competitive environment that requires fine motor skills.

thanks for any suggestions!

Cyberathlete: The only type of athlete that gets fatter and less in shape the more you train and compete :D

The only one I remember is Killcreek from a few years ago.

Edit: and Kornelia, who is really super nice

edit2: there was an article recently in the nytimes about fatality and they mentioned this all girl clan from sweden who was supposedly pretty good

Indeed.

Maybe Asia Carrera instead - she's her own webmaster, and she wrote an article in MaximumPC, for what that's worth. Wikipedia says that she is a gamer too.
Probably not the right kind of "athetics" though.

I think the guys in Penny Arcade have a niece who is a prize-winning gamer. Are fictitious characters acceptable? :D

A girl won the world championship for starcontrol or whatever that game is. I think it was by Blizzard.

I wouldn't call it anything with athlete in it though.

Some of the guys at the tournament were in tears when they realized they were beat by a chick gamer.

They're sponsored by Ubisoft it seems.

On an unrelated note, I sat next to the CEO of Ubisoft this one time on a flight to SG, while playing Prince of Persia on my PSP. We started the conversation, he offered me some gaming magazines and told me to keep them. I then asked him how he got them and he said they're free, then gave me his business card.

True story.

As an athlete AND a gamer... i find the term cyberathlete ridiculous. Competitive or professional gamer would be fine... but to use the term athlete is lame.

If you really wanna get technical...

a person trained or gifted in exercises or contests involving physical agility, stamina, or strength; a participant in a sport, exercise, or game requiring physical skill.

1528, from L. athleta, from Gk. athletes "contestant in the games," agent noun from athlein "to contest for a prize," rel. to athlos "a contest" and athlon "a prize." Before 1750, always in L. form. Replaced O.E. plegmann. First record of athletics is from 1727. Athlete's foot first recorded 1928, for an ailment that has been around much longer.

As far as first person shooters go I can't think of any female pro gamers. Most of the female "pros" you see in online articles here and there just play in Female only tournaments.
