Can you machine wash 100% polyester?

I have these black dress pants that i recently bought, they're 100% polyester, not expensive at all. The label says professional dry clean only, but is this really necessary? I'd just rather throw them in the washer on delicate cycle and then tumble dry low heat, or if this wouldn't do then i suppose i'd be willing to simply hand wash and line dry. What would be your suggestion here?
 
wash in cold, gentle cycle because it can pill, and then drape it over something to dry.
