Can you keep your number if you switch cell phone companies?

I've finally had it with Sprint.

Would it be possible for me to keep my current number when I switch to Verizon, or will I have to get a new number?

They haven't implemented the portability thing yet, so, very unlikely.

Doh. I remember reading an article that said it'd be ready by September 2003, but perhaps they're running behind. I've had this number for several years, and it would definitely be a pain to switch numbers. *sigh*

Plan switch date = September 10, 2003 (I'm taking over someone else's Verizon plan)

If you're out of contract, I would reduce your sprint phone to a $10/month "emergency" plan, take over your friend's contract, and then move your old phone number over in November. Just keep voicemail service and change the message to say "my phone number until November is XXX-XXXX, then this one will be active again"

Great advice, KingNothing. How do I sign up for Sprint's "emergency plan"?

I'm guessing the emergency plan doesn't include voicemail add that and taxes probably bring it back up to $20 or so...

Bah, so she pays $20 more over two months. Well worth it to keep your number.

When you call Sprint to cancel your account, ask for the retention department. When I called to fake cancellation in order to get a better deal, one of the things the guy offered me was a $10/month emergency plan. I didn't ask for any details.

Edit: Sprint's dragging their heels on the number keeping feature, not to mention charging all their customers $2 a month to cover the "expense" of it. Verizon's been ready to go with it for a while, dunno about the others.

I feel your pain. I have had Spring for almost 3 yrs and just recently switched to Verizon.

You won't regret it.

What is your guys' #1 complaint with Sprint? I was a Sprint customer for 2 years, and I got sick of not being able to text message like everyone else could, so I switched to T-Mobile. I've had some issues with TMo, but I would never go back to Sprint at this point.

On a landline? LOL. I wouldn't know, I don't have one. I have a $2 charge from Sprint for that on my bill though.

that is my #1 complaint. text messaging takes sometimes 10 minutes to do when the server is not responding. Same goes for browsing the web.

I was told that they will be able to switch phone companies and keep your number by the end of this year

Yeah. They're the ones that have really been dragging their feet and yet it seems they have the most to gain:confused: Oh well, I really can't complain about Sprint (except for the non-phone based text messaging) so either way.. Too bad I waited or else I probably could have had them take that WNLP surcharge removed from my bill(s).

EDIT: Ivy, your phone sucks which is probably the reason for a lot of your complaints.
