Since one of the Anand Moderator's had a hissy fit and locked the thread in the General Hardware section and didn't even have the decency to move the thread to the OS section, here goes a cut/paste:

Ok, my friend has a computer with Win 98 on it (originally 95, upgraded to 98 w/ CD). He wants to put in a new 40 gig HDD and dump the old 6 gig HDD which has his Win98 OS and all his stuff on it. I told him he could just use Norton Ghost to transfer the info.

However, he says that a guy he works with a Circuit City said that you can use JUST the Win 98 upgrade CD he has, to install Win 98 on a new HDD WITHOUT having Win95 on it first. How the heck can you do this? Is he bsing?

What other options besides Ghosting can I use to get his new HDD up and running with Win98?

BTW, he doesn't have his old Win 95 CD. He just has a Compaq restoration disk, and he doesn't think he has Win 95 on it. Ack...what to do??

You can use an upgrade CD to do a full install. It will just ask you to put in the CD for an operating system that you can upgrade from.

Yes...derrango is correct. Just start to install it.
You can use it if you have an old Win 95 disk or Windows 3.1 disks. Dunno about DOS disks...maybe
You will need a way to access the CD rom drive. You can use a windows 98 boot disk you can find anywhere on the web. Search "ultimate boot disk".
You will have to partition and format the drive first.

Yeah, that's what I figured, but he said he only has a Restoration CD, and not the Win95 CD. Does the Compaq restoration CD have Win95 on it? I guess I'll just have to go over there and look thru the CD. If it doesn't work, he'll either just Ghost the whole HDD or buy Windows XP.

as for the restoration disk...I never have used one for the upgrade but when it asks for a previous windows copy...stick it in and direct it...see if can find the magic files MS Win. 98 upgrade is looking for..

WOOHOO! Well, if you're right, then you've saved us a ton of money and trouble man! Thanks! BTW, he didn't want to Ghost his HDD because it was full of crud and programs were crashing a lot (read old). Thanks man!
