Since one of the Anand Moderator's had a hissy fit and locked the thread in the General Hardware section and didn't even have the decency to move the thread to the OS section, here goes a cut/paste:

Ok, my friend has a computer with Win 98 on it (originally 95, upgraded to 98 w/ CD). He wants to put in a new 40 gig HDD and dump the old 6 gig HDD which has his Win98 OS and all his stuff on it. I told him he could just use Norton Ghost to transfer the info.

However, he says that a guy he works with a Circuit City said that you can use JUST the Win 98 upgrade CD he has, to install Win 98 on a new HDD WITHOUT having Win95 on it first. How the heck can you do this? Is he bsing?

What other options besides Ghosting can I use to get his new HDD up and running with Win98?

BTW, he doesn't have his old Win 95 CD. He just has a Compaq restoration disk, and he doesn't think he has Win 95 on it. Ack...what to do??

Your gonna need either a full-version copy of win95 or the first disk of win3.x to do the full install from Win98 upgrade.

The friend of a friend that knows this guy, that dates a girl who's brother workes at Circuit City is very correct.
This is what you do.
Start with a clean, formatted HD. Boot to the C:\ using a boot disk with CD-ROM support. You can make this disk yourself or go to www.bootdisk.com and get on there.
Now stick in your Win98 upgrade cd and run setup off the cd-rom
After a few moments and a few questions the install will say something to the effect 'No OS installed, where the hell is it".
Take your 98 upgrade cd out and stick in your 95 CD (must be full install). Redirect to the Win95 dir on that cd.
The Win98 install will say "Cool, you kick ass. You may proceed with the upgrade". At that time take the 95 cd out put the 98 upgrade back in and continue with the upgrade.
In the end you will have a fresh full install of Win98.

You must get a full copy of Win95.

Thank me later.

It dosen't need to be a full install CD for win95...it can be an upgrade CD. It just can't be a restore disk.

Also make sure that's not one of the stupid Win98SE CDs that will only work in Windows.

Derango is right.
The Win95 CD doesn't need to be the full version, you can do it with an upgrade CD.
The last time I verified with Win3.1 it asked for four of the six floppies and not in order.
