I have win98 but can I format the disk and install win2K prof. upgrade and will it just ask to install 98 so it can see that I own a previous version. or does 98 need to be installed first. does anyone know.

I'm pretty sure you'd need the Full Version of W2k Prof. in order to install it on a formatted hdd. The Upgrade is meant to be installed on top of Windows 98/95.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong :)

I just want to know if it just needs to read the win98 license? like win98 update does.

Hi,

You do not need the full version to install. In point of fact, you don't need to format the disk first, either. W2K Pro Upgrade setup will allow you to delete / create partitions, format partitions, etc. If your BIOS has the provision, you can set the system to boot from your CD/DVD drive with the W2K Pro Upgrade disc in place. That way you won't need to use the startup diskette set.

Don't be tempted to install W2K over Win98 (or anything else for that matter). Clean installs work best. As long as all of your hardware is on the hardware compatibility list, you should be golden. Good luck!

I would certainly hope you can install it on a new hdd...

I don't like the idea of having to upgrade win98 to 2k, sounds pretty yuck!

I just upgraded Win98SE to Win2k on three different machines and it worked as slick as can be. I had no problems whatsoever. I started one by booting to the CD and the two others, I ran setup from the command prompt. I also used my Win2k upgrade disk to start a new system from scratch and it just asked for a WinNT 3.51/4 disk part way through to verify that I had one. This was the easiest and most trouble free OS upgrade I have ever done.

Do you have to have Windown NT to use a Windows 2000 Upgrade Disc? Can you insert a Win98 disc instead of NT?

TIA, Micron

Are you sure the Upgrade disc will work by itself on a formated computer? It doesn't ask you to put in a win95 or win98 cd sometime during setup? I've never worked w/a win2k upgrade cd, but in the 95 and 98 upgrades, it'll ask you to stick in an old win ver disc(disk) to verify u have a "qualifying product".

As I said before, when I started with a clean install and a Win2k upgrade disk it asked for a disk for a previous installation. I think Win98 was a choice. I first tried a Win95 OEM CD which it didn't see. Next I tried a WinNT CD which worked splendidly. When installing over a previous Win98 installation all it asked for is the key. It says on the packaging what it is supposed to upgrade.

Heh, I remember win98 upgrade...stuck in my win 3.1 floppies...had to go through all 22 or so disks. That really sucked.

I successfully installed Windows 2000 onto a formatted hard disk using a Windows 2000 upgrade CD, and was never asked to insert any previous Windows version disks during setup.

I had Windows 98SE on the disk before, but as I formatted the entire drive (all 3 partitions) there was no way setup could have known that Windows 98SE had once been there...

The only thing to point is that my upgrade CD is a Student License copy, but even so it is an UPGRADE version, not a FULL version.

Orbit: Very interesting about the student license. Never have seen one. I've used a coupla dozen of the commercially available upgrade CDs, though, and the definitely do ask for you to insert a disc from a previous version of Windows if there's no evidence of same on the system's hard drive(s).
