Can you install one of the linux live CD things to a USB drive and boot from that?

I have a laptop drive just sitting here that I would like to put to use. It would give me a good excuse to play around with linux while I am at work. I'd rather do that then just use the cd since I could save stuff and have my mp3 files and crap on it.
