can you identify this airman in the picture?

this is for an assignment at school. if i could figure out who this person is and how it relates to my literature class (romance and realism), and why this particular picture, then i get to skip a writing assignment. i just need to figure out who it is, i think i can come up with a good argument. can anyone help?

try looking up german uniforms to identify the era, and if we can positively identify the era of which this person was from, we can next find any person of significance from their military
